Land Screening Map

Drop a pin on any U.S. parcel and see what public federal maps show for that spot: flood zone, mapped wetlands, soil type and nearby military installations. Then get a list of whom to call to confirm it.

  • Any U.S. location
  • 4 federal data layers
  • Printable screening sheet
  • No signup, nothing saved

Step 1 of your land due diligence

Screen a spot in about a minute

Search an address or coordinates, or click the map. Map checks send the selected coordinates to public agency services. Address searches go through this site to the U.S. Census geocoder. Address matches are approximate; use the pin for land without a street address.

  1. 1Find the parcel
  2. 2Click a spot
  3. 3Print & call

Map files and agency requests load only when you open the map.

Base maps: USGS The National Map. Layers: FEMA NFHL · USFWS NWI · USDA-NRCS SSURGO · DoD DISDI MIRTA (via USACE). Search: U.S. Census geocoder (approximate street-address matching). Data is loaded live from each agency and may be incomplete or out of date.
Good for

What this map can tell you

  • Whether a spot sits in a mapped FEMA flood zone, so you know to ask about insurance and building rules early.
  • Whether federal maps show a wetland, which can limit where you build or clear.
  • Which soil survey unit to look up for septic and building ratings.
  • Which offices and professionals to call, and what to ask them.
Not a substitute for

What it can't tell you

  • Zoning, permitted uses, or whether you can build. Only the local planning office can answer that.
  • Whether a septic system will be approved. That takes a site evaluation or perc test.
  • Legal access, boundaries or easements. A survey and title review do that.
  • An official flood determination or wetland delineation.
Where the data comes from

Public sources, loaded live

FEMA maps · Wetlands Mapper · Web Soil Survey

FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer

Effective flood maps. Shown when zoomed in close. Official determinations come from FEMA's Map Service Center or a lender's determination.

USFWS National Wetlands Inventory

Wetlands mapped mostly from aerial imagery. Useful for screening; not a jurisdictional delineation.

USDA-NRCS Soil Survey (SSURGO)

Soil map units and ratings. Read septic and dwelling ratings in Web Soil Survey.

DoD installations (MIRTA)

Boundaries and points for major military sites, published by DoD and hosted by USACE. Not comprehensive.

FCC National Broadband Map

Provider-reported internet availability. Linked from each point rather than drawn on the map.

USGS The National Map

Aerial imagery and topographic base maps, in the public domain.

A note on professional advice. The Land Screening Map is general education. It displays public federal data that may be incomplete, out of date or imprecise at the parcel level, and it checks single points rather than whole parcels. It does not determine flood insurance requirements, wetland jurisdiction, septic approval, zoning, access or buildability. Confirm everything with the county, the relevant agencies and qualified professionals before you buy. Read our full Educational Disclaimer.
